When Thoughts Come True

How many times have you ever thought of something that could happen...and then it does?

Feeding the herd this mornin', I tripped while pushing the wheelbarrow, fell forward and landed with my lower teeth on the rim of the metal wheelbarrow. Tripped over a damn rock...which I have done too many times to remember~and always thought "what if?"

One tooth is broke in half and a couple others are loose...split my lip of course, and I look like I was in a fight...and lost.

Off to the dentist...hope they can fix me up.

It can only get better from here today.

Sunday Stills ~ Two-In-One Edition

This week's Sunday Stills Adventure in Photography photo challenge was "fruits and vegetables." Last week's challenge was "sunrise or sunset with buildings." I missed last week's because we were moving cows...but I had the photo...so, I'm posting it today!

Cantaloupe...a few fresh fruits are becoming more affordable.

OK...I can't help myself...this photo at least still goes along with the "food" category...someday anyhow...but she's just too cute not to show off!

We've nicknamed her "Early Girl" since she was almost a month early.

Shirley asked if she was going to be part of our herd, and the answer is no. We're limiting ourselves to 5 breeding cows because that's about all our grazing land can sustain. So, this year's calves will be sold after weaning.

Boy...it's been a VERY long time since I participated in Sunday Stills...and I'm not sure why. The photo challenges are always interesting, the people are fun, and the photography is good.

So, I'm going to get back into the groove of things.

Deceiving Photos

A very peaceful view...but it could make you think different...

 Yes, there are rattlesnakes up that road!
My girlfriend used to live up there in the tree line...
LOTS of rattlesnakes!

...and as I try to take some shots of the tumble weeds blowing down the road, the wind is blowing so hard I can't keep the camera straight...and it rips my ball cap off my head...I had to run 30 yards down the road to catch it...twice!! I gave up! Ah, it was still fun!

The days are getting shorter...we're moving wheel lines in the mornin' before the sun comes up...sort of by Braille since we can't see much.  But we're up early enough to see the beautiful sunrises!






The Canadian Geese are already flying over...does this mean an early winter? I surely hope not...but the cool mornings are starting to feel like fall already.

I always love the morning light. As the grass begins to show that we are well into summer, the colors of the sage brush and grasses, mixed with the lichen on the rim rock always makes a pretty picture. Add a few fluffy white clouds with a bright blue sky...and a good cup of coffee...it's another perfect day!

Today, I'm sharing a couple of views from the ranch with SkyWatch Friday! And, today SkyWatch Friday begins its 5th season...amazing!

Perfectly clear blue skies are nice...but I think a few clouds always adds a lil' more interesting aspect to a photo. Hat Butte is shadowed by this afternoon cloud.

Mid-Summer Clouds

A local rancher brought a nice big herd of cow/calf pairs to graze the property across the road from us (these are just a handful). I'd much rather see this kind of new neighbor than seeing new houses going in! I love seeing and hearing these cows all day!

SkyWatch Friday

It's that time of year again when the weatherman is lookin' like a fool...please take no offense if you're a weather forecaster ;~)

After yesterday's snow squall came through, the sun shone brightly on the hillside of freshly fallen snow up Long Canyon...and the black clouds moved on toward the east.

Sunday Stills ~ Clouds

This week's Sunday Stills photo challenge is one we've done before, but clouds are always fun to photograph! This time of year we get thunderstorms coming through in the late afternoon...usually right around 5PM when it's time to move the wheel lines...at which time I get the heck out of the field~My Man's friend told him a story about the time he saw lightening hit a wheel line and the current bounced right down the line from wheel to wheel...really freaky!

The first photo was taken last weekend before the challenge was announced...I just liked how the clouds lay parallel to the rim.

These next photos are from the storm that came through on Wednesday afternoon.

Storm clouds gather to the south.

Thunder heads begin forming to the north.

To the east thunder, lightening, and sheets of rain begin coming down...as I'm still in the sunshine...just for a lil' bit.

Within a half an hour the wind kicked up with huge gusts and a driving rain...it lasted for about 20 minutes. Luckily for us, all our hay was baled and stacked off the field...not so lucky for Hay Man Rudy...the winds blew his windrows all apart and he had to re-rake them...which looses leaves off the alfalfa...meaning loss of $$. Such is farming~

Which Season Is It?!?

There IS a reason I'm confused...

Last week it definitely felt like winter with the cold temps that we had and a bit of snow too.

This week is feels like fall again.

Friday is supposed to reach 72 degrees and Saturday 74...back to summer again?

Oh well...just takin' each day as it comes.

The past couple of days, we've had typical Harney County fall wind. It doesn't want to let up and it makes going outdoors undesirable to say the least. As I fed the herd last night, we had a good rain shower too.

But the clouds across the way were very eerie.

The setting sun brought out a beautiful hue.

Call me crazy, but the clouds reminded me

of a sows udder.

Maybe I need more socialization ;~)

Colt brought this with him to breakfast.

This is a real cheap way to desensitize your horse!

They're every where and we'll have to pull them

out of the fence lines and burn them.

After feeding time, the wind and rain quit and it was as still as could be. Ahhhhh...much better!

Today I've got to get out to the garden and dig up the rest of my onions and tear out all the frozen, dying tomato and zucchini plants. I'm sure going to miss my tomatoes...we've only got a few left in the fridge...

Wordless Wednesday

Harney County...how can you love nothing?

Eastern Oregon is never boring...to me anyhow. I always say I live where there is nothing and I like it that way...but...

In the past week that I've been traveling the county doing my ag surveys, I thought I had nothing to blog about...then, after looking through some of my photos, I decided I was totally wrong!

Monday on my way down to Diamond.

I drove home in 2 inches of snow that evening.

Wednesday's trip to Catlow Valley to one of the
largest ranches in the state of Oregon.
What was grazing in the meadows
with Hart Mountain guarding over them?
Cows?...nope...

Beautiful Big Horn Sheep...what else?

On the way home from Catlow Valley...a stop
at the Malhuer Wildlife Refuge;
a favorite stop-over for thousands of migratory birds.

And just today, Bald Eagles winging their way
over the alfalfa fields in search of the tasty, (but nasty)
local Sage Rat.

Folks in Harney County just appreciate the lil' things in life.
