We've Been Branded!!

~If you love the land like I do,
you'll never be lonely.~
~Carrie Carter 1880~

Well, I guess I should say the ranch got its brand! The State has you send in numerous prioritized choices and also a list of prioritized locations where the brand will be located on the cattle.

This is our 4th choice brand and our 3rd choice location (right hip)...

Not fancy, but practical...It'll only be for the calves. We're happy to be able to get our stock branded because cattle rustling really is a problem in our area...how about you others that raise cattle? Is cattle rustling a problem?

We're planning a freeze brand for the horses, but we're still contemplating the design...that one has to be "pleasant" to look at, since it's something that we'll be seeing every day!

UPDATE:  Here are a few articles online about the problem we have in SE Oregon with cattle rustling...

I can't find the article that I wanted to link, but these two are interesting.

Rustlers ride wide open range of Great Basin

Then this article is from January 2011...ranchers found stolen cattle in their herd!!

  1. how cool! We have a L over a 4 and a lazy E over a 4 on the right hip for our calves. I was thinking of getting a horse brand as well, but not sure if I want either of those or something completly different. I would like to design something cool, but our province says we need to have letters or numbers and can have a symbol as well.

  2. looks like a good mark to me.
Remember a good horse can sport any brand maybe more than one, its only a dink that needs a fancy brand.

Use that brand on all your stock, proudly stamp it on the horses as well.

Its a fine brand mark. And will be associated with the fine horses you ride.

  3. It looks good to me! What's with the cattle rustling? i thought Roy Rogers and Gene Autry solved that problem many moons ago. ;-)

  4. Cattle rustling? Really? Tell us more!!!

  5. That is so cool! Can't believe that cattle rustling is still around! Too bad... but your cattle will be stylin' in the new brand!

  6. This is the first time I've been on your blog. Looks great.

Congrats! We just got our brand registered last year. We were so excited.

We don't have to worry about cattle rustling though. We have more problems with neighbors who don't want our cows or horses. Somehow the critters always find a way through the fence.

  7. That is a nice brand, well designed. Maybe one of your other choices would work for the horses? Simple is always good. Our Diamond Lazy H brand wasn't one of our choices at all, but none of the ones we wanted were available so that's what the brand department suggested. I think we wanted lazy T connected to S.

  8. Hi Gtyyup, Nice, clean looking brand. We have my Dads... V.. / slash. The rustling not to bad around here every one knows who's cattle are run on what ground. The Nevada side of the state is where one hears the reports from. I'm sure it's every where.

  9. For those of you with inquiring minds, I put a couple of links on the post regarding cattle rustling. I can't find my favorite article on the subject, but I'll keep looking and post it if I find it.

    Thanks for asking~

  10. We brand a T over Quarter Circle in the horses and bulls and a T over P on the cows. I wouldn't say we've ever had rustling problems but I think sometimes one might get butchered for someone elses freezer.

  11. Well, I know its not your first choice, but it is a pretty neat brand. Too bad rustling had to be the motivation behind getting it. Is that a 3 iron?
I asked my father-in-law, by way of Malcolm who is on the phone with him now, if rustling is a prob. in our area. It was discussed but has led into another topic (calf prices down in ou NE where a friend saw them sell at the sale barn for $500) so I'll have to get my answer later. I'll let you know.

  12. PS: like the new header!
I think maybe its not a big problem in our area thus far. Hope it stays that way. My sister-in-law did have a very uniquely marked Longhorn cow dissappear a couple years ago. Never ran across a corpse, adn we looked in every hole so....who knows! She'd stick out like a soar thumb if she had just mixed in with a neighbors herd.

  14. We dont have cattle rustled, but believe it or not, Sheep are the thing here!
500 were rustled last month from a local farm!

  15. What kind of restrictions, if any, are there on brands in your area?
I think here we are allowed to use numbers, letters and some of the more "standard"symbols ie /^-

  16. Nice looking brand. Shame that there's still people that take what's not theirs.

Too bad it's not the old days and you can just String 'em up! ;)

  17. YAY! Looks like that brand of yours will show up nice and clear; Congrats!

Montana has 100's of inspectors and tight laws on livestock; all cattle coming in and out are inspected. Even in order to bring my horses over from Wisconsin i had to have a brand inspector come out and look at them. You hear of cattle stolen, but I guess in Montana its still a hanging offense, so you dont hear of it often...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope, no hanging, but this was passed back in 2009 for the State of Montana ~"Senate Bill 214 requires that a person convicted of the theft or illegal branding of any livestock pay a minimum fine of $5,000 and not exceeding $50,000 or serve a jail sentence not exceeding 10 years or both"

If I understood the article right, that means $5000. to $50,000. per COUNT; for example if you have 8 counts of stealing livestock against you, the MINIMUM fine would be $40,000. Also, they can confiscated any vehicle, trailer, equipment etc. that was used in the crime...!
