Sunday Stills ~ Shoes or Boots

~I never thought I'd marry anybody but a cowboy.
Maybe that's why I'm still not married.~
~Rosie Barker, 1902~

This week's Sunday Stills photo challenge is pretty self explanatory. Of course my fav would be boots...not shoes...and boots gotta have a good pair of spurs and at least a lil' bit of cow or horse manure on 'um too!

Do the spurs tell a story about the rider? I've never seen a set of spurs like these before.

This photo of My Man's boots is a repeat here on my blog; but not with Sunday Stills. Being on the ground when  branding calves is a messy job.

Maybe the spurs tell you about the rider's personality...or the way they view life? They're an everyday tool of the trade...what do you think?

Head on over to Sunday Stills and find links in the comments to the other participants...maybe you'd like to join our weekly challenge!

Happy Sunday!

  1. My first thought when I looked at the first photo was "Oh that's an interesting set of spurs!" I've never seen that downturned style before either.
Pooh on boots is a fact of life around livestock, isn't it.
My spurs have the big rowel like the last set. People thing they are mean because they are big, but the opposite is true- the large flat surface is a lot kinder than small rowels because the pressure is dissipated over a larger area.

  2. Thosee first set are pretty unique, never seen one like that before either.
I like the lst set, similar to mine but different.

  3. I like your man's muddy, mucky boots. Says "works stock" to me.

I've never used spurs (not even wimpy English nubbins). Afraid my Arabians would put me in the rafters. :-)

  5. Very nice! I did boots too...farming boots though :)

  6. Twenty-five years of riding horses and never found a single mount that responded well to spurs with rowels. Although they look great, not sure I would ever use them.

  7. Great shots. I use spurs on some and not on others.

  8. Nothing goes better on boots than a nice set of spurs.

  9. Nice pictures! I love the look of spurs but don't use them; I am afraid Gilly would jump at something and I would grip with my legs and stab him and I would be flying to the moon!!! I'll just keep my heels naked! LOL

  10. I own a pair of Kelly spurs....they aren't made anymore; and I've never had to use them on any of my horses except my warm blood.
He had a habit of backing up and sitting his butt on the hot wire fence!
It would bite him and he'd just sit there flinching & still in one spot; so I put on my spurs and never had to contend with that habit again. My rowels are worn down and dull...but they're mine.

  12. Nice pictures, boots in action.

  13. I think the first pair are upside down. It looks like the rest there is pointing upwards when it should be against the boot. Lovely pictures.

  14. I don't know anything about spurs but I like your photos!

    Cheers :-)

  15. I haven't seen a pair of spurs like those either. I guess you have to lift a heel a lot to reach the horse. Those last ones may be a bit large, lol! Hopefully just for looks. I can't imagine any horse being that dead sided to need those, unless it's been banged on alot by someone!

  16. I LOVE BOOTS AND SPURS! I was in the grocery store the other day, and a cowboy was tromping up and down the aisles in boots and spurs --- I loved it! I know spurs have a job, but I think personality does show through both in the spurs and the straps. I'm sure boots are the same way.

Awhile back, I got some plain spurs from tractor supply, the first pair I've EVER had. I actually got to wear them on a horse awhile back, I was happy!!!

  17. interesting...brings to mind that old question
do the spurs make the man, or the man make the spurs
(but it was referring cloths...was something like that)
Heck, I have no idea what I'm talking about

  18. You nailed it again. Well done

  19. Can't speak from experience so I'll pass on the spurs question but I love the picture. Tells a who nother story.

  20. Great shots, do spurs actually do anything or are they just for decoration?
